A longitudinal study by Linda M. Williams, Ph.D., found that girls who had been sexually assaulted in childhood appeared to have forgotten the abuse many years later, or had forgotten it for a time and later remembered the abuse. These findings made an important contribution, Dr. Williams explains, to the understanding of childhood trauma and memory. The study showed that memory is not always continuous and validated the experiences of many survivors.
